“The project was a tall task with many stretch goals throughout the company, but [we] came together, collaborated, planned, and executed as never before…. What a great job!”

“This is the simplest MANAGEMENT SYSTEM we’ve ever seen in my 34-years with [this company].”

—Director, Regional Operations Integrity

Context/Challenge

Our client, a multinational Oil and Gas company, faced challenges in consolidating their disparate safety practices after years of operation and organizational changes. This was compounded by recent growth via acquisition. Their need for a unified Health and Safety Management System (HSE MS) became urgent, requiring a new governance structure, integration of historic safety standards, and streamlined processes.

  • Bogged Down: The team was not making the progress they needed.
  • Different Strategies:  There were divergent philosophies for implementing the shared vision.
  • Simplification:  They needed to reduce complexity while capturing the best of legacy systems.
  • Implementation:  The ideas and materials needed rollout on an ambitious timeline.

Approach

We committed 18 months to streamline safety practices, working within client teams to:

  • Assess:  assembling and enabling teams in a structured way to review documents and deliver recommendations for simplification and integration.
  • Document:  assembling teams to amend documents according to the recommendations and guide the revision and sign-off process across many stakeholder groups.
  • Roll Out:  convened a Project Management Office (PMO) with a charter to develop individual project Implementation Plans for each approved management system. Enabled tracking and review of Operating Rhythm for effectiveness, and project health monitoring.
  • Implement: guided the PMO activity as they worked through implementation plans and provided real-time observations to gauge effectiveness of the plans in the field. Developed and left the client’s team with a Management System Maturity Matrix.

Result

This engagement helped the client achieve an on-time and on-budget delivery of their new HSE Management System.

  • Implementation schedule milestones were achieved.
  • Implementation in one year versus anticipated 3-4 years.
  • Manuals were rationalized by nearly 50%.
  • 1000+ field employees were engaged in training effectiveness assessments.
  • PMO practices and individual skills were sustainably improved.

The project team was awarded with a prestigious company award for excellence upon their completion.
